History
The pharaohound is an ancient breed and has its roots in Egypt. A lot of egyptologists paid attention to this and in 1935 a tomb was found, in Giza (Egypt). In this tomb an image of a dog was found, which showed resemblance with the pharaohound as we know it today. This image, known as anubis, was suppost to guard over the burried king.
From Egypt the pharaohound ended up in Malta when man established
there from Egypt. Untill today the pharaohound is found in Malta. The
pharaohound even made it to national symbol of Malta and is to be found
on stamps etc.
In Malta the pharaohound, which is used to hunt rabbits, is better
known as Kelb-tal-Fenek (rabbithunter). Witthout the efford of the Maltese
people the breed would have lost its autenticity ages ago. Because of
these people the breed is still in its original ancient state. Bij importing
the pharaohound from Malta, the breed was spread troughout the rest
of the world.
Many pharaohounds can be found in Scandinavia, England and in America.
Besides these country’s they are also seen in other parts of the
world yet in fewer numbers.
